Annapolis, MD -
DI Games of the Week
Planning on going, make sure to check with each home school for time and location.
Thursday April 12 Lehigh at DII #22 ESU
Battle of Lehigh Valley and Route 33 as the Mountain Hawks travel to a feisty Warrior squad in East Stroudsburg. Although all of Lehigh’s losses have come to Division I teams, Lehigh is currently 3-0 against Division II, which includes a one goal win over #13 Moravian. This will be a start of 5 games to end the season for Lehigh and the last Division II opponent on the board. For ESU, they sit within the bubble for Keystone Playoffs with five games left as well. For the Warriors, they control their own destiny.
Friday April 13 #8 Loyola at #4 Maryland
With both teams shooting for the playoffs, the winner of this game will have an inside shot at hosting a 1st Round game, which is a big advantage to advancing to the Elite 8 at the National Tournament. For Maryland, 2012 has been a return to form and back in the Top Five while Loyola has shown flashes of brilliance in beating #9 Towson, #12 Virginia, and #10 Ohio State.
Friday April 13 #16 UMass-Amherst at Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart hits the meat of its schedule with #16 UMass, DII #7 Connecticut College and #2 Hofstra left to end the season. With the New England Conference on the line, expect both UMass and Sacred Heart to pull out all the stops for a much needed victory. For UMass, expect a full contingent to make the trip to bring home the NE Conference Title outright.
Friday April 13 #1 Navy at #7 Delaware
Saturday April 14 #7 Delaware at #2 Rutgers
The Fighting Blue Hens get a crack at #1 Navy for a big home night game. Currently ranked #7, Delaware will then travel to #2 Rutgers for a Saturday tilt.
With both opponents undefeated and at full strength, the results will go a long way in determining whether a shake-up of the Top Ten is necessary before the playoffs begin.
Saturday April 14 #15 Villanova at #20 Princeton
Except for a blow-out loss to #2 Rutgers, Princeton has been within 2 goals in every game. Losing 3 games by 4 goals has not been the typical Princeton way, but if the Tigers can end on a three game winning streak, they will throw themselves into the playoff mix. For Villanova, a win would solidify a three game streak would put them in elite company and into the 1st Round.
Saturday April 14 Ohio State Round Robin
The best of Division II blow into Columbus, Ohio for a shot at the Buckeyes. With Division II #1 Cincinnati, #6 Slippery Rock and Louisville, OSU will have their hands full with three games on Saturday. After going 2-0 in 2008, OSU has gone 1-1 in 2009 and 2010, while 0-2 in 2011 against both teams. A highly contested rivalry series with a great beginning tradition!
Saturday April 14 #19 Syracuse at #11 Cortland
Cortland has taken care of business all year in racing out to an impressive undefeated home record. Fortunately for the Red Dragons, all of their games are at home and with Syracuse on tap for a Saturday rumble the stakes could not be higher. Still smarting from their historic playoff loss in the Dome in 2011, the Orange could salvage their season with a win over their arch nemesis and propel themselves into playoff possibilities. If there is one place to be, then Cortland takes center stage.
Saturday/Sunday April 14/15 Penn State Play Day
For PSU, hosting a weekend full of out of division play will provide a great chance to see the best Keystone Division II teams on home turf. With both Division II #11 IUP and #13 Moravian on tap Saturday and Dickinson and Bucknell on Sunday, the Lions will need to run the table to keep a home playoff bid alive. In their four wins, PSU has won by just over 9 goals on average. It should be interesting as both IUP and Moravian have been playing well above average all season.
Sunday April 15 DI #14 Cornell at DII #4 Binghamton
With both teams at one loss apiece, this non-conference rivalry game will provide a great test to each. Binghamton has to get through both #9 Ithaca and Clarkson the previous day, but no matter what the results are, expect the Bearcats and Big Red to leave everything on the field as they shoot for the playoffs and represent the Empire Conference.
